Driving a motorhome...

Is it difficult to drive a motorhome?
Not really - motorhomes feel very similar to driving a modern van. However, you do need to remember the height particularly when entering car parks or low bridges. Also, when reversing you also need to take care. Although a lot of our motorhomes have reversing cameras fitted, we still recommend someone from your party going outside and acting as a ‘spotter’.

How economical are motorhomes?
The economy is also similar to a modern van. Expect to achieve 25 – 30 mpg.

How a Motorhome Works...

What facilities does the motorhome have?
All vehicles described as motorhomes have a kitchen with sink, fridge and hob as a minimum and a washroom with a toilet, sink and shower. Beyond that, facilities will depend on the spec of the motorhome and all are listed on our motorhomes for hire pages.

How does the motorhome toilet work?
All motorhomes are fitted with Thetford chemical cassette and the cassette carries a chemical which breaks down waste. The toilet needs to be emptied every few days into a chemical toilet facility (found on all camp sites and the cassette is then recharged with chemicals and ready for use. This job is not as unpleasant as it sounds .....

Does the motorhome carry fresh water?
Yes, unlike caravans, motorhomes carry fresh water. The fresh water is stored in an on-board tank and is used in the kitchen and bathroom. The fresh water can last up to a week, and can be refilled on site. The motorhome rental also carries grey water, that is the used water from the shower and sinks. The grey water tank can be emptied on the campsite, usually through a grill sited in the floor.

What is a hook up?
The hook up is a cable which connects the motorhome to a 240V power source. The hook up provides power to the fridge, lights, TV, microwave and also charges the leisure battery.

Do I need a hook up?
No, all motorhomes are also equipped with a leisure battery which is charged when the motorhome engine runs. The lights and TV will run using the leisure battery but not the 240V power sockets. The leisure battery will eventually lose charge and you simply need to start the motorhome to re-charge, or plug into a hook up for an alternative electric supply.

How does the fridge work?
All motorhomes have three way fridges. This means they run from one of three sources – it can run from the electric hook up (while on a camp site), from gas (when there is no hook up) and from the leisure battery when the motorhome is in motion.

Is there hot water?
Yes, hot water is supplied by an on board gas run boiler. Is it cold in a motorhome? No, all motorhomes are insulated and have blown air heating systems. Blown air heating systems run off gas, electric or diesel and provide warm air flow throughout the van.

Can I plug in my hairdryer/laptop/phone charger?
Yes, there are three pin sockets in all motorhomes. However these only work when connected to a 240V hook up.

How does the hob and oven work?
The hob and oven are powered by gas. All motorhomes carry their own gas bottles.

How do I find out how it all works?
You will get a detailed handover from the operator when you pick up the motorhome, lasting in the region of an hour. This will explain how everything works, and is your opportunity to ask questions. You can also phone at any time during your hire with technical queries.

About My Holiday...

Do I have to stay on a camp site?
In the UK in most cases, the answer is yes. However there is a network of pub stopovers in England and wild camping is acceptable in Scotland. Elsewhere in mainland Europe there are good networks of stopovers, described as aires de service in France. A good source of publications is http://www.vicariousbooks.co.uk/

Can I take the motorhome hire to Europe?
Yes, as long as you have told us in advance so that we can put European cover onto your motorhome hire insurance.

What is the Camping and Caravanning Club Privilege membership?
This is included in the price of your motorhome hire; it entitles you to book and stay at Camping and Caravanning Club sites at member rates.

Accidents and Breakdowns...

Do the motorhomes have Breakdown cover?
Yes, Breakdown cover is included in your motorhome rental price.

What about insurance?
Fully comprehensive hire insurance is included in your motorhome rental price.

Does the insurance cover everything?
There are two exceptions to the insurance: glass and tyres. The hirer is liable for the cost of replacement glass and tyres (apart from normal wear and tear) during the hire.

Do you offer Collision Damage Waiver?
No, we do not offer CDW.

What do I do if there is an accident?
Firstly, make sure your party is safe and the vehicle is secure. Do not admit responsibility. You should get the names and addresses of everyone involved, including witnesses, and take photographs of the incident if you can. Tell the police straightaway if someone is injured or you feel unsafe, and contact your operator immediately. You should also complete the accident report sheet that is in the vehicle and send a copy to both the operator and Lazee Dayz.

What if the vehicle is damaged?
If a repair can be done easily we will book the vehicle into one of our network of experienced motorhome repairers. If the vehicle is unusable we will seek to provide an alternative motorhome.
